THE AUGMENTED STATION ORCHESTRA:
Conductor, T. H. MORRISON. "Bergliot." A Dramatic Recitation with Orchestral Accompaniment. Words by Björnstjerne Bjornson. Set to Music by Edward Grieg. The motive of this little master-piece is founded on a chapter in the Saga of Harold Hardrada. Bergliot, the wife of Einar Tambarskelvir, is represented lamenting the death of her husband and son treacherously killed by King Harold and urging her tribesmen to take vengeance. The tribesmen do not respond to her exhortations, and suddenly a change of mood comes over her; she realizes that vengeance belonged to the days in which Odin, the lord of Valhalla, whom she renounced in childhood, was worshipped, and that, if vengeance is to be taken at all, it is not for her, but for the new God of Nazareth to exact it. Crude as is the attitude to the new God, the lament has the pathos of showing the early glimmerings of Christianity in Norway and the recognition in the mind of a bereaved woman that vengeance must be renounced to the just workings of an all-wise Power.
