THIS is the fourth of the series of special programmes that the London Station has invited representative figures outside the world of broadcasting to choose and arrange. The first was selected by ' A Man in the Street,' the second by Pat Hendren , the famous cricketer and footballer, and the third (given last Saturday) by Mr. J. R. Clynes , the Labour ex-Cabinet Minister. On this occasion the Stage has its opportunity to show how far its views on what a wireless programme should be differ from those of the sportsman and the politician. Miss Margaret Bannerman has won a high reputation as an actress of high comedy, who yet has the deeper emotions well within her range.

Sonata in B Flat Minor, Op. 35 (The ' Funeral March' Sonata)

AFTER Chopin's First Piano Sonata, the work of a student of eighteen, there is a gap of ten years before his Second. This work 'has caused more discussion, probably, than any other work of his. It is so unconventional that Chopin's great contemporary, Schumann, expressed the opinion that it was a mere whim of Chopin's to call this assembly of four of his ' wildest children ' a Sonata...
Yet many have found a spiritual unity in its four Movements. Tho work is perhaps best conceived as a single expression of a tragic view of life. Certainly the first two Movements suggest strenuous struggle, with intervals of peace and happiness. The Funeral March, which forms the Thud Movement, has been taken as symbolic of untimely death ; and Chopin himself spoke of the Finale as of ' subdued talk of surface trifles, which masks the aching heart below.'
In spite of this Sonata's scorn of convention, the FIRST MOVEMENT is in the usual form, and is far more clear, concise, and masterly than that of the First Sonata.
The ' Grave ' is a mere four bars of introduction. Of the Movement proper, the First Main Tune is made out of little agitated rhythmic figures, the Second Main Tune is one of the calmest, most serene melodies Chopin ever wrote.
The SECOND MOVEMENT is a Scherzo in the usual form-Scherzo proper, Trio, and Scherzo repeated.
'Scherzo' literally means a ' jest ' ; this one is generally taken as representing the storms and calms of human emotion. Perhaps a touch of light-heartedness is intended.

Mr. Coates is one of our deftest writers of light music. The titles of many of his works - The Countryside, Summer Days, The Merry-makers, Wood Nymphs, promise gaiety that the music never fails to convey. For a good many years he played the Viola in the Queen's Hall Orchestra (which brought out several of his Suites at the Promenade Concerts) and in String Quartets. Since 1919 he has devoted himself solely to composition.
