Iago (Baritone), Otello's Ensign, plots to poison his General's mind against Desdemona, fastening suspicion on Cassio, a Lieutenant (Tenor). Otello (Tenor) listens. A chorus is heard from the Garden, where Desdemona received flowers and gifts from the people. Then Desdemona (Soprano), Otello, Emelia (Mezzo-Soprano), Iago's Wife and Iago join in an ensemble in which much is made of the handkerchief incident, well known from Shakespeare's play. A long duet between Otello and Iago closes the Act, Otello swearing revenge on his innocent wife.
