Characters
(in the order of their speaking) :
The action takes place in the year
1563 in the ante-room to the Queen's Bedchamber. Towards the back is a window recess hidden by a curtain. The whole room is dimly lit by a single hanging lamp. Mary Seton , one of the Maids of Honour, enters and lights two tall candles on the table; one of these she carries into the Bedchamber. Presently the Queen comes in, followed by Mary Beaton , and throws herself wearily into a chair.
