A new interest attaches to the present performance of any excerpt from Eugene Onegin since Tchaikovsky's finest opera is to be revived this season at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, and it is quite possible that acts from it will be broadcast. This waltz occurs in the second act of the opera at a ball given in honour of the heroine on her birthday. While the waltz is going on two of the characters, Onegin and Olga, are engaged in a flirtation. In the opera the waltz is followed by a quarrel between Onegin and another character, Lensky, which, in the last act, has a tragic consequence. But the waltz is self-contained and carries no hint of any emotion but that of delight in the dance.
