ELSIE McCULLOUGH (soprano) THE BELFAST
WIRELESS SYMPHONY
ORCHESTRA
(Leader, PHILIP WHITEWAY )
Conductor, E. GODFREY BROWN The Yeomen of the Guard, the Gilbert and Sullivan opera which followed Ruddigore, made its appearance in October, 1888, as the eleventh in the long series of the Savoy operas. Both author and composer regarded it as the best work of the whole series, and it certainlv stands out as distinct from the others in more ways than one. The libretto deserts for once the typical whimsical humour for which we have had to add to the language the word ' Gilbertian ', and the music is also on rather more serious lines, lyrically and dramatically.
