STUART ROBERTSON (baritone)
THE BELFAST
WIRELESS CHORUS and ORCHESTRA
Conductor, E. GODFREY BROWN.
In 1706 Handel, then aged twenty-one, left his post in Hamburg to visit Italy. He had already composed operas successful enough to awaken jealousy in the hearts of older composers ; one of them, indeed, had involved him in a duel, from which he emerged more by good luck than good swordsmanship.
During the four years he spent in Italy — staying at Venice, Rome, Florence and Naples in turn-he was busily engaged in composition, for the stage, the church, and the concert room ; Rodrigo was the first of two successful operas produced during his stay.
The ' Sailors' Dance ' is a bustling piece in 2-2 time which needs nothing in the way of elucidation for the enjoyment of its brisk merriment.
The story of Wagner's The Flying Dutchman is based on the legend of a Dutch sea-captain who, encountering a furious gale while he was trying to round the Cape of Good Hope, swore that he would achieve his purpose though it took him all eternity. The devil, overhearing, took him at his word and condemned him to sail the seas until the Day of Judgment. Only a woman, whose love would last until death, could release him; so, as the sole concession to the awful severity of his punishment, he is permitted to go ashore once in every seven years in order that he may seek and win such a woman. The opera opens just at the end of one of these seven-year terms.
