TCHAIKOVSKY'S Violin Concerto is among the half-dozen most famous in the whole violin concerto repertory. Like those of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Brahms, it is the only one of its kind that Tchaikovsky attempted. The Concerto is in three movements, the longest" and musically-varied being the first, and from a point of view of violin technique it bristles with difficulties, particularly in the cadenzas. The second movement is built largely upon a lovely but melancholy Russian folk-song, the treatment of which is simple and charming. This movement leads, without a break, into the Finale, which is full of gaiety and high spirits.
