A Calendar of the Rural Round
Devised by JOHN R. ALLAN
Produced by MOULTRIE KELSALL
Advised by JOHN STRACHAN and broadcast from the house and close of a farm in Buchan
The farmer's work, like that of the housewife, is never done. Task follows task through almost every hour of daylight from one year's end to another, and what is not done today cannot be made up tomorrow. The farmer's new year may be said to begin in November, immediately after the harvest is safely gathered in. Tonight's programme starts with ploughing and runs full circle round the year to November twelvemonths. But it is not all hard drag and struggle with difficulties. There are markets, cattle shows, and other celebrations to take the sharp edge off toil, and John R. Allan seems to have forgotten nothing of importance.
This is to be expected from the author of ' Farmer's Boy', which has been so well received by the reading public. Townsmen who are inclined to fight shy of country topics need have no hesitation in making up their minds to listen to this programme. It has such diversions as selling the turkey, bothy concerts, roups, feeing markets, love-making, and cattle shows ; and is one of the most ambitious of its kind that has ever been undertaken in Scotland. It will be illustrated with actual farm sounds.
