What Do You Know?
This week the 400th edition of What Do You Know? will be broadcast. The programme started in 1953. One of the first 'Brains of Britain' (in 1956) was a schoolboy from North Wales, Antony Carr. Three years later he won the title 'Brain of Brains' In 1962 he won the unique title of 'Top Brain,' after a contest which can only take place every nine years.
In 1957 What Do You Know? discovered Ted Moult, the genial farmer who afterwards appeared in TV's sister programme Ask Me Another, and who since then has endeared himself to millions as a television personality.
The achievements of our 'Brains of Britain' greatly impressed our friends overseas. Dr. Reginald Webster was invited to compete against Australia's Quiz King; so was Ian Gillies, 'Brain of Britain' in 1964. Another 'Brain of Britain,' Henry Button, was flown to South Africa to compete against their King of Quiz in Johannesburg.
For 400 editions of What Do You Know? John P. Wynn has set over 24,000 questions, and 828 contestants have taken part. Only one contestant was not heard - the one who took fright five minutes before we went on the air and ran out of the studio, and out of our programme. Well, What Do You Know! (Joan Clark)
