Trouble in Turmoil Five with Bernard Braden
Written by Bob Kesten
In 1956, thirty-three-year-old Flight Lieutenant Barton of the R.A.F., serving a two-year exchange posting with American Strategic Air Command, was flying a giant strato-tanker high above northern Greenland, refuelling a B-52 bomber. The pipe coupling broke, and high octane petrol sprayed into the aircraft at the rate of fifty gallons a minute. In seconds, a pool had formed in the tail over its electrical nerve centre. The crew were now in immense danger. The tiniest spark vould blow the aircraft to pieces.
