A programme for children under five
Nursery rhymes, stories, and music
• The world is so full of a number of things '-and that is what makes it such a strenuous place for our under fives. No wonder they need to rest so often upon the familiar things, to reassure themselves about what they know; no wonder they like to hear the same rhymes and stories over and over again; no wonder, too, that they enjoy different stories about the same people, as a rest from constantly meeting new ones...
Hence the various series of stories which appear in our programme from time to time — Ursula Hourihane 's tales, for example, of Benjamin and Muffet, to be told this week by Julia Lang and introduced by Catherine Edwards (who is with us also next week).
Benjamin Bear and Muffet live together in affectionate harmony. They win affection from others as much for their own lovable qualities as for their kindly deeds. They overcome difficulties too, as when they return Baby Rook to his nest. How welcome to the small child is the safety and security of this story world; and how reassuring its suggestion that the real world may not prove unmanageable and quite beyond his powers! Mrs. Dale, the doctor's wife, records the daily happenings in the life of her family
Script by Joan Carr-Jones
Last week Mrs. Dale stayed with Gwen because David had to go away for a few days on business. Isabel told Mrs. Dale that Trudi Baume, a young Swiss girl, daughter of a friend of her husband's, was coming to live with them. When she arrived she was acclaimed by all as being very sweet and attractive. Berridges had a staff dance. Miss Pink, influenced by Poppy Coffin, had a new hair-do and facial. Bob met her beforehand, and thinking it was probably for his benefit, did not go to the dance. Maud French was asked by the editor of a woman's magazine to write an article on Richard Fulton. Richard Fulton had photographs taken at his flat but when he realised who was writing the article he refused to allow the pictures to be used. Maud telephoned Gwen to ask her to use her influence and persuade Richard Fulton to change his mind.
