A programme for children under five
'Why did the snail want to go to Australia? ' came a message ' from Christine.' Unfortunately Christine did not enclose her address so we were unable to reply, but if she listens on Wednesday, when Julia Lang retells the story ' From the Cabbage Patch to Australia,' by Mary Higson , she will find the answer. This tale was a general favourite. It made the children laugh. ' Charlie the Cat's Birthday,' by A. W. Orchard , caused laughter, too; so much,' wrote the mother of a four-year-old boy, ' that we missed most of the story. Please may we have it again fairly soon? ' So on Wednesday it will be told by Julia Lang. The storyteller tomorrow and on Thursday is Dorothy Smith with ' Barnaby's Bus,' by Ann Elliott , and ' Candy, the Lazy Kangaroo,' by Janet Lamb , which latter tale, when last broadcast, promoted an unexpected research by a grown-up who ' spent the entire afternoon reading the Encyclopaedia Britannica and learning about kangaroos instead of making scones for tea.' On Friday comes Daphne Oxenford with ' Andrew and the Pigeons,' by Margaret Purcell. The stories and nursery rhymes this week and next arc introduced by Catherine Edwards. Elizabeth A. Taylor
