A programme for children under five
A certain boy wants a story about a bus. 'He has a conductor set,' says his mother, 'and for five months now he has practically lived in it so you can see that a bus story would mean a great deal to him.' Stories about mechanical things may have various kinds of appeal for our children, including that which arises from the compelling preoccupation in this present age with all things mechanical, and that which derives from children's interest in doing what grown-ups do and which leads them, by imitative play, to assimilate the knowledge they gain from their observations.
'Barnaby's Bus,' by Ann Elliott, includes both these elements. It will be told tomorrow by Dorothy Smith, who will also be back on Friday with Eileen Mathias' story, 'Little Pig Out in the Rain.' Today and on Thursday our storyteller is Jul Lang with a tale by Mary Higson, 'From the Cabbage Patch to Australia,' and 'A Present for Tony' by Maya Elkan, while on Wednesday we shall hear from Daphne Oxenford about 'Mr. Rooster' by Monica Jarrett. Script by Joan Carr-Jones
Last week Gerda confided to Dr. Dale that she and her husband had quarrelled over a position he wished to take in the North. Gerda did not approve of it because of his poor health. Mrs. Morgan and Susie took the twins to a baby show and afterwards discovered that Mrs. Morgan had brought back a strange baby in mistake for Cherry. Both Susie and Mrs. Morgan became hysterical but eventually Cherry was traced and safely returned to her mother. Bob invited Ashley Weston to stay at Virginia Lodge while his theatre was being decorated. Ashley arrived, and from the first night looked like being a difficult guestl
