'Bless you all ' wrote a mother, in amused exasperation, after last year's broadcast of Elizabeth Coleman 's story in which Nicholas, after helping with the washing up, plays with the wooden spoon as a boat. and then attaches his own boat to it as a tug. This mother had had a hard morning and ' now, here I am, ready to settle down to hear " Woman's Hour " and finish some Christmas presents, but my son is already kneeling on a chair at the sink, spoon in hand, shouting for a boat to " fasten on," and the door is wide open between us! I have blessed you all once or twice before,' she adds, ' but it's all in a good cause! ' And, indeed, in such a case it was, for water-plays form a fundamental activity for small children, setting free both emotions and imaginations in a very valuable way. Ought we, however, to hint to mothers with ' helpful ' children that we shall hear more of Nicholas next week? Last week Gwen lost her wedding ring while stirring her mother's Christmas puddings. Mrs. Dale chopped up the puddings, and found the ring in the last one. When Mrs. Dale and Mrs. Freeman returned from town they saw water pouring down the stairs. Mrs. Freeman then remembered she had forgotten to turn her bathroom tap off when Isabel offered her a lift to town. The carpets were soaked, the ceiling in Mrs. Dale's bathroom fell down, and some of the lights fused. Mrs. Freeman was afraid to meet Dr. Dale because he was very angry. The next day some men came to do repairs, which in turn annoyed Mrs. Morgan. Mrs. Dale discovered she had reached the thousandth page in her diary and Dr. Dale took her out to lunch to celebrate. While they were at Sally's shop buying flowers they met Margaret Lockwood. Owing to a muddle in dates, Elaine Allardyce came to dinner on the wrong night. Bob was alone and asked her to stay, and they cooked the dinner together. Mrs. Dale met her and told Dr. Dale she was just the sort of girl she would like to have for a daughter-in-law.
