Modern life depends on rapid communications and exchange of goods and people over great distances, and any serious breakdown of transport in any part of Europe has immediate repercussions on the whole of the Continent. War damage of transport has been a prime factor in lower production and lower standards of living generally. This week's programme brings stories of reconstruction from Belgium, France, Italy, and Holland besides an account of Britain's own recovery effort in road and rail transport.
