More than 25,000 sailors and their dependants-among them 6,000 widows-were last year helped out of their difficulties caused by sickness or some orher form of distress. Seamen who left the sea through disablement were made proficient m jobs such as farming and furniture-making, whole aged seamen and their wives were looked after and given comfortable homes, and sailors' orphans were give-n a good start in the world.
These and many other activities covering every aspect of welfare and benevolent work for the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy, and Fishing Fleets, are carried out by 120 voluntary societies, supported to the extent of more than £ 200,000 a year given by King George's Fund for Sailors.
