Cracker failed to get the ransom money for Miss Sabry, which was demanded by five o'clock in the morning. Clare, discovering this, goes to Tony and offers herself as security, thinking Tony is the kidnapper. Tony insists that nobody has kidnapped Miss Sabry and that she is, of her own accord, in hiding from Cracker, who has been pestering her. To prove this Tony takes Clare to the cellar bedroom to meet Miss Sabry-but the girl is not there. As they are about to leave the cellar bedroom, they hear someone coming down.
