Two visits to the holiday resort to see the lights - at 9.0 and 10.45 tonight

Television cameras will be at Blackpool tonight to show viewers something of the famous autumn illuminations which attract more that three-million visitors during September and October. Geoffrey Wheeler, aboard a tram moving slowly along part of the six mile promenade, will describe something of what has been called 'the greatest free show on earth' - an ingenious and tremendous spectacle of lighting arrangements and moving tableaux.

Equipment valued at nearly £400,000 will be in use along the sea-front, and this year's expenditure is calculated at £98,000. In previous years it has been possible to include the opening ceremony, always performed by a well-known personality. This year the veteran actor, A.E. Matthews, accepted the invitation, but it was found that his BBC commitments (for the television series The Sky Larks) necessitated his being in London on Friday. So the opening ceremony was put forward to Wednesday, and a film of Mr. Matthews switching on the lights will be included in tonight's programme.
