A difficult question for most people to answer, but in the case of Mr. Collins, the cobbler, it is made simpler by the atmosphere in which he lives, endlessly nagged and harassed by his wife, beset with domestic obligations, and unable to escape beyond the shop, even to the local dance in the village hall. He longs inevitably for the grand life, the glitter and glamour of money, and to share it with him, the bewitching Rita Robinson whose shoes he is constantly mending. And who is to judge whether his dreams are less real than reality?
