Billy Bragg profiles jazz trumpeter Ken Colyer, a musical evangelist who joined the Merchant Navy just to go to New Orleans. He immersed himself in the Big Easy's jazz scene and returned to spread the gospel in Britain. 

Amongst the musicians eager to pick up what the explorer had learnt was Lonnie Donegan, who recorded Rock Island Line in July 1954, a track which shook up the British music world and launched hundreds of new skiffle groups. 

Contributors include Richard Hawley, Pete Townshend, Martin Carthy, Colyner's nephew Martin, Donegan's son Peter, and jazz musicians Chris Barber and Bill Huntingdon.

Singer/songwriter Billy Bragg traces the history of British rock and pop back to relatively unknown jazz trumpeter Ken Colyer (1928-88), who joined the Navy specifically to reach New Orleans, from where he returned to Britain inspired by the jazz of the American Deep South. A few years later the Colyer-influenced singer Lonnie Donegan (1931-2002) released the skiffle-pop recording Rock Island Line - a big 1956 chart hit that shook up the then staid British music scene and eventually paved the way for rock and pop giants Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page and Brian May , and folk star Martin Carthy. The programme features a skiffle duet by Billy Bragg and Richard Hawley , and contributions from Pete Townshend, Martin Carthy, Donegan's son Peter, Colyer's nephew Martin, author Pete Frame, Dixieland trombonist Chris Barber, skiffle veteran Chas McDevitt, drummer Colin Bowden, trumpeter Pat Halcox and bassist Bill Huntington.
