American country music reached crisis point in the early 1980s, when public perception of the genre was defined by the pop-country crossover hits of Eddie Rabbit , Crystal Gayle, Ronnie Milsap and Kenny Rogers. Singer Wynonna Judd looks at the Nashville acts - the so-called "new traditionalists" - who responded to this watered-down approach with music rooted in the sounds of early country music. The new wave included Lyle Lovett, Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle and the O'Kanes, but was spearheaded by Randy Travis, whose 1986 album Storms of Life yielded four top ten US country hits - including two number ones - with none of them denting Billboard's pop charts. Judd looks at this era's immeasurable influence on "new country", with input from Randy Travis, Ricky Skaggs, Kieran Kane, Josh Turner and producers Tony Brown, Steve Buckingham and Kyle Lehning.
