1/4. Lulu presents a profile of soul tenor and songwriter William "Smokey" Robinson, who until 1972 fronted Motown star quartet the Miracles, whose hits include the 1960 single Shop Around (Motown's first million seller), You've Really Got a Hold on Me, The Tracks of My Tears, I Second That Emotion and The Tears of a Clown.
Contributors include Smokey Robinson, original Miracle Warren "Pete" Moore, ex-wife Claudette Robinson, former Supremes singer Cindy Birdsong, Motown songwriters Lamont Dozier and Janie Bradford, Motown manager Shelley Berger, journalist Adam White and soul aficionado David Nathan. The story begins with a look at Robinson's early years in Detroit, where he met mentor Berry Gordy. Producer Sue Clark
The Story of Smokey Robinson 7.00pm R2
Producer Sue Clark (who brought us the fabulous Supreme Girl Power earlier this year) has done it again. Not only has she managed to collate the most frank, intimate and informative clips I've ever heard on the life and music of Smokey Robinson, including the great voice of soul himself, but she's also talked with the founder of Motown, Berry Gordy - famous for never giving interviews! This is superb stuff, matched by enthusiastic presentation from Lulu and music that will either make you want to cry or dance - or sometimes both. (Jane Anderson)
