Someone once said that the marches of Sousa would make a man with a wooden leg step out; a man would have to have a wooden heart not to respond to the music of Eric Coates.
(SIR CHARLES GROVES)
The genius of Eric Coates , whose centenary falls this month, is commemorated in a series of four programmes written and narrated by the composer's son Austin Coates. The first programme covers the period 1886-1923 and traces Eric Coates 's progress from gifted childhood to the full flowering of his creative talent and some of his earliest mature compositions, including the Suite 'Summer days' and the 'Merrymakers overture'.
