with The Golden Hour Part 1: 1977
Punk Rock and New Wave exploded on to the scene: The Sex Pistols' contract with EMI ended, but undeterred, 'God Save The Queen' made it to No 2. It wasn't all safety pins and bondage trousers though - Jonathan Richman's style was rooted in teen-beat pop and his 'Egyptian Reggae' with The Modern Lovers reached No 9 in December. Elvis Costello was 'Watching the Detectives' whilst the Christmas No 1 was 'Mull of Kintyre'. Romance was still in evidence in the shape of David Soul and the Bee Gees, who asked How Deep is Your Love?
1977 was the year Elvis Presley, Bing Crosby and Marc Bolan died. Red Rum won the Grand National for the third time; Brezhnev received the UN peace medal: the Laker Skytrain took off for New York and the Muppet Show became a near cult.
