Part 2: in which he meets the islanders and staff on Flotta where the North Sea oil comes ashore.
The island of Flotta in The Orkneys had traditionally been farming and grazing land with a population of 425 in 1881 which by 1971 had dwindled to 73. The discovery of oil in the North Sea and the subsequent development of an oil-handling terminal on Flotta meant new economic growth for the island, turning it into something of a success story. Great care was taken over the design and colour of the terminal facilities so that they would blend as harmoniously as possible with the landscape. And the terminal was equipped with the most advanced fail-safe systems to reduce greatly the possibility of oil spillage.
