This year marks the 20th anniversary of the launch by Europe and America of the first infrared observatory - the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). In August this year, Nasa will be continuing the tradition by launching the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF). Europe is also building a successor to IRAS, a new spacecraft called Herschel, which will carry the most sophisticated infrared telescope ever built. Quentin Cooper speaks to the scientists who are working on these amazing telescopes.
