The second in a three-part series in which Rainer Hersch profiles the great exponents of humour in classical music.
Caricaturist, broadcaster, raconteur and tuba player, Hoffnung came to London in 1939 as a schoolboy refugee.
Although he died at the age of 34, he established a tradition of classical music comedy that persists around the world today. His widow, Annetta Hoffnung, talks about his life and plays some of her collection of recordings, which have not been broadcast in over 40 years.

Black gospel music is now the fastest-growing music industry in America. Contemporary gospel with its urban sound faces the same accusations of "sell out" and irreverence that blues musician Thomas A Dorsey encountered in the 1920s. In the last of the series, singer-songwriter Mal Pope travels to Harlem, where gospel services are marketed commercially, and looks at how British music is now beginning to influence the American scene.
