Sir Peter Ustinov celebrated his 80th birthday last month with an astonishing range of accomplishments already behind him - as an actor in films (two Oscars) and theatre, novelist, playwright and screenwriter. He is also a raconteur, graphic artist, photographer, stage director and designer, and the recipient of many humanitarian awards for his work with Unicef and Unesco. On 25 May 1951 two of the world's most notorious spies, Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean, defected from Britain. They had been recruited by the Russian secret service, the KGB, while working as British diplomats. Simon Hoggart tells the story of how Burgess, a traitor, an alcoholic and a notorious homosexual, and Maclean, an insecure diplomat of ambiguous sexual persuasion, managed to fool the British security services for more than a decade while they fed Official Secrets to the KGB.
