A History of the Crusades
A series of eight programmes presented by Malcolm Billings 7: Thirteenth-century Acre was not only the capital of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, but was also reputed to be the richest and wickedest city in the world. In 1291 it was there that the crusaders made their last defence of the Holy Land before their final defeat by the 'Muslims. Today, Acre is a sleepy fishing port in the north of Israel, but recent archaeological discoveries have begun to reveal Acre's medieval past and why it played such a crucial role in the fortunes of the crusaders.
