The disappearance of fish from Scandinavian lakes and injury to trees in German forests have been attributed to acid rain, produced from the polluting gases emitted by industry and by vehicles. Although some governments have, for the first time, taken steps to curb these emissions, how strong is the evidence that acid rain is to blame for the environmental changes? Alun Lewis examines this question and asks if the correct action is being taken to prevent further damage to forests and lakes.
