Whether you are a first-time buyer or a habitual mover, there are always questions to be answered. First, what are the prospects of a mortgage at present? For buyers: do you need a separate survev or will the one the building society does suffice? Should you try to buy privately? Do you really need a solicitor? And the seller: should you save fees by doing your own selling? There's a crack in one of the walls - should you cover it up? Should you redecorate before selling? And no doubt you have troubles of your own.

In June 1940 France signed an armistice with Nazi Germany. The northern half of France was to be occupied by German troops, and the French armed forces were to be demobilised. Marshal Petain, the 84-year-old victor of Verdun, had formed a government, and the following month he and his ministers moved into the genteel spa town of Vichy, in the unoccupied southern zone.
Roderick Kedward has been to Vichy and spoken to surviving members of Petain's government. He traces the 'myth' of Petain back to the Marshal's first broadcast, 40 years ago today.
In the first of two programmes, French men and women talk of the immensity of the defeat, the hostility to Britain. and the controversial nature of Petainism within France.
