Hadrian's Wall
Thousands of man-hours and millions of stones resulted In the most far-flung outpost of the Roman Empire.
The wall remains the best-known archaeological monument in Britain, receiving half a million visitors a year from all over the world to see its forts and milecastles. It is the most intensively studied structure of its kind, but because so few contemporary accounts exist of how and why it was built, conjecture is strong and arguments between archaeologists are lively.
Dr Peter Fowler presents some of the latest archaeological findings and controversy from the experts working on the wall. Compiled and produced by MICHAEL GILLIAM
