The Countryside
Come forth into the light of things
Let Nature be your teacher.
(WORDSWORTH)
You may well feel that you can enjoy the pleasures of the countryside without knowing much about the birds and bees, the plants and trees and flowers, and the rich diversity of animal life on land and water. But if you do want to know more, you can put your question to naturalists Judy Poore and Ted Ellis in the Tuesday Call studio.

A Chinese Errand by HUGH BAKER
Read by Allan McClelland
' The first row of stalls in those c'ays was where all the fortune-tellers sat ... but the kind I liked best were the ones where a little* bird took your fortune for you out of a pack of fortune-papers. Well, it stands to reason that birds know more about these things than people - they fly nearer heaven, don't they? '

Peking Zoo
Founded in 1906 as the ' Garden of Ten Thousand Animals ' by the Empress Dowager Tz'u-hsi, Peking Zoo today is noted for its large collection of rare Asian species. The zoo knows more about Giant Pandas than does any other zoo, and so far it is the only establishment to have witnessed a Giant Panda birth.
Anthony Smith, recently one of the annual four million visitors, gives his impressions of the zoo, and describes some of the animals not seen in captivity anywhere else in the world.
