Peking Zoo
Founded in 1906 as the ' Garden of Ten Thousand Animals ' by the Empress Dowager Tz'u-hsi, Peking Zoo today is noted for its large collection of rare Asian species. The zoo knows more about Giant Pandas than does any other zoo, and so far it is the only establishment to have witnessed a Giant Panda birth.
Anthony Smith, recently one of the annual four million visitors, gives his impressions of the zoo, and describes some of the animals not seen in captivity anywhere else in the world.
