U-39. surfaced at ten to four on the afternoon of 14 September 1939, 11 days after the outbreak of war between Germany and Great Britain - the first victim of a new submarine detection device. This new device was named after the initials of the Allied Submarine Detection Investigation Committee - ASDIC.
