Being ' down in the dumps,' or having ' the blues ' is a common enough experience for most of us. It is not pleasant, but it passes. We cannot easily imagine having the blues permanently, and so severely that life seems either pointless or worse - daily torture.
This is depressive illness at its most severe, and it demands medical treatment. But depression in its milder varieties often goes unsuspected, because it takes many forms which are not recognised by the patient.
Psychiatrists can offer a number of treatments for this crippling illness, and its early diagnosis can greatly improve the chances of recovery.
