In the last decade new anaesthetics, drugs and surgical techniques have transformed the art of medicine.
Anaesthetics have come a long way since the early days of ether. The modern anaesthetics can take a patient down to the level of oblivion required for a major operation, or keep him at a level of near-consciousness quite free from pain. Machinery controlled by the anaesthetist can take over the function of heart, lungs and other organs, while sophisticated monitors can anticipate an emergency and even prophesy the patient's future condition.
