Tonight's conductor, Christoph von Dohnanyi , who was last year appointed Musical Director to the Frankfurt City Theatre, is no stranger to the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and in fact conducted it in Bruckner's Sixth at the Royal Festival Hall three years ago. A critic has described him as following in the footsteps of his grandfather Ernst, the great pianist, teacher, and composer, in ' seeking out loveliness even in the profoundest music.'
Tonight's soloist in Mozart's Piano Concerto No 27 is Clifford Curzon , taking part in his only Prom this season. His performance of the work, at Sir Robert Mayer 's 90th Birthday Concert, was acclaimed as one of the finest ever heard
