Live coverage as the 12th IAAF World Championships begin in Berlin. Triple Olympic champion Usain Bolt will be eager to show the world he is still the man to beat as the 100m heats get under way, but current 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay world champion Tyson Gay of the USA has been in fine early season form, and will be reluctant to give up his crowns without a fight. 

Elsewhere, Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu starts the defence of her world 400m title, while fellow Briton Jessica Ennis begins her quest for heptathlon glory with the 100m hurdles and high jump disciplines. The 23-year-old missed out on the Beijing Olympics through injury but is one of the favourites to win a medal in Berlin after posting several personal bests during the first half of 2009. Fellow Briton Kelly Sotherton, who won the bronze in Osaka in 2007, is absent after failing to overcome injury.

In winter, Yellowstone is frozen solid - locked in snow as deep as a house for over six months. Whether you hunt for meat, live off stored body fat or whether you simply hibernate, you need to take every advantage, however slight, to save precious energy - then you might just make it through the winter to enjoy the green grass and balmy days of spring.

As we follow the grip of winter over the course of six freezing months, we chart the fortunes of Yellowstone's wildlife in a finely balanced fight to survive. Bison use their massively powerful heads to dig through some of the deepest snow in America to reach the grass beneath. A red fox listens out for mice scurrying six feet beneath the snow before diving headfirst into the drift to snap up its prey, while otters slide through Yellowstone's winter wonderland to find any remaining open water where they can fish. All the while, as the herds of elk and bison are gradually weakened by the cold, one animal gets stronger - the wolf. 

But all is not as it first seems - there are larger powers at work. Whether a wolf, a bison or an elk makes it through is intimately linked to Yellowstone's greatest secret. Sleeping beneath the ice and snow-covered surface is one of the world's largest volcanoes. In an extraordinary twist of nature, everything from the freezing winter cold to the creation of a snowstorm is determined by the power of Yellowstone's volcanic heart.

The Hairies journey to Manchester to meet Helen and Jonnie, the couple who are prepared to let them loose on their wedding cake. The boys decide to bake a traditional fruit cake with a Hairy Bikers twist, using quantities of ingredients so large the cake has to be mixed in a wheelbarrow.

After baking and marzipanning the cakes, the boys attend sugar craft lessons before they attempt to begin decorating and then constructing the five tiers.

It is art meets engineering for the boys, and the bride and groom are followed in the nail-biting lead-up to their wedding.

Conductor Charles Hazlewood explores the lives, times and music of great composers. In the final programme in the series, he looks at Mendelssohn, whose music embodies the sound of the Victorian age. A friend of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Mendelssohn made ten visits to Britain and his work appealed strongly to British tastes. 

Mendelssohn's melodies such as O for the Wings of a Dove and Hark! the Herald Angels Sing became hugely popular and his astonishing overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream perfectly captured the Victorians' fondness for Shakespeare and fairy stories. He portrayed the grandeur of Scotland through a romanticism shared with poets such as Keats and Wordsworth, and captured the public imagination with his pioneering use of a new conductor's tool - the baton. 

Charles's journey includes a stormy boat trip to Fingal's Cave and a visit to a chocolate factory, as well as a trip to the recently restored Birmingham Town Hall, where a massed choir comprising choral groups from across the West Midlands is brought together with the BBC Concert Orchestra and soloist Andrew Shore to perform extracts from Mendelssohn's iconic work Elijah.
