In the Arctic, the polar bear's ice world literally melts beneath its feet, forcing it to swim vast distances and take on one of the deadliest adversaries on the planet.

Together they raise a golem, a creature fashioned from clay, capable of dispatching anyone, even Martin Mould. But when Mouldy winds up dead, the boys have to deal with the awful power they may have unleashed and the perils of getting what you wish for.

David Suchet embarks on a journey round Europe in an effort to unravel the riddle of his family history. Some relations think his father's father was German, others Russian, others Estonian. When and why was their name changed from Suchedowitz to Suchet? His mother's side of the family is equally confusing. Was her grandfather called Jarché or Jarchy? He claimed to be a French photographer, but was he?

First he explores the one English branch of his family: the ancestors of his maternal grandmother Elsie Jezzard. David has always loved boats, and his investigations reveal that Elsie's grandfather was a master mariner. Further digging at the National Maritime Museum leads him to the coast of Suffolk and the story of a terrible storm, a shipwreck, tragedy and heroism.

Next he heads to London and Paris on the trail of his great-grandfather, Monsieur Arnold Jarché, a 19th century photographer. Was he really the proprietor of the Eiffel Tower Studio, and was he really French? Finally, he journeys across Eastern Europe in search of the birthplace of his grandfather and the roots of his unusual surname.

An amazing journey in Norway's far North as Joanna Lumley pursues a lifelong dream to track down the elusive, stunningly beautiful Northern Lights - 'the true wonder of the world,' as she puts it.

Joanna grew up in tropical Malaysia, and as a little girl never saw snow or felt cold. Inspired by fairytales and picture books, she always longed to make the journey north. At last she travels north across the Arctic Circle, up through Norway to Svalbard, the most northerly permanently inhabited place on Earth, where she has to cope with temperatures approaching minus 30 degrees centigrade.

With a box of crayons in hand, her journey takes her from train to boat, to husky-sled, to snowmobile, as she is pulled ever northwards by what she calls 'the strongest point of the compass'. She explores the romantic fjords of Lofoten and learns to ride a snowmobile, speeding across endless expanses of Lapland tundra with a Sami herdsman in search of his reindeer. As she reaches the Arctic Ocean, she prepares for bed in a hotel made entirely of ice. Everywhere she goes, she asks about the mysterious Northern Lights.

David Attenborough looks at deserts around the world from Namibia to Chile, unravelling the secrets behind desert survival and revealing their ephemeral nature.

David Attenborough takes a look at deserts, which cover a third of the Earth's land surface. From space they appear lifeless but a closer look reveals a different picture.

Deserts, in fact, are surprisingly varied; from Mongolia's Gobi desert where wild Bactrian camels have to eat snow in lieu of water, to the Atacama in Chile where guanacos survive by licking the dew off cactus spines.

Changes are rare in deserts but they play a crucial part in their story; from Saharan sandstorms nearly a mile high to desert rivers that run for a single day; from the brief blooming of Death Valley in the USA, to a plague of desert locusts 40 miles wide and 100 miles long - two events that might occur once in 30 years.

The highlight of the programme is a unique aerial voyage over the dunes and rocky escarpments of a Namibian desert. From this lofty viewpoint, we follow elephants on a desperate trek for food and - most amazingly of all - desert lions searching the wilderness for wandering bands of oryx.

The programme unravels the secrets behind desert survival - and reveals the ephemeral nature of this stunning environment.
