Then attention switches to the rowing lake at Shunyi for the men's and women's lightweight double sculls rowing semi-finals, introduced by John Inverdale and Steve Redgrave. British duos Helen Casey and Heather Goodsell and favourites Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter race for places in the final.

During the programme the spotlight also falls on Fiona Pennie, who is competing for honours in the women's K1 slalom canoeing; judo players Michelle Rogers and Peter Cousins; Billy Joe Saunders and Tony Jeffries in boxing's second round; and Elena Little in shooting's women's skeet.

Olympic action introduced by Hazel Irvine with John Inverdale and Steve Redgrave at Shunyi rowing lake where the programme begins with the men's lightweight four semi-finals. Britain are reigning world champions in this discipline so the pressure is on the crew of Richard Chambers, James Lindsay-Fynn, Paul Mattick and James Clarke. Commentators are Garry Herbert and Dan Topolski.

Next up is the canoe slalom, where British attention is on Fiona Pennie, the 2006 world silver medallist in the women's K1, as she tackles the Shunyi course in the morning's semi-finals and final. Helen Reeves won a bronze medal in the event four years ago and she is in the commentary box alongside Paul Dickenson.

In the archery there is the climax of the women's individual competition, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and medal matches. Korea has dominated the event, winning Gold on the last six occasions. Nevertheless, Britain's trio of Charlotte Burgess, Naomi Folkard and 2004 bronze medallist Alison Williamson will have hoped to reach this stage. Commentary is from Eddie Butler.

On the penultimate day of the judo competition, Team GB has two representatives who hope to be in contention - world silver medallist Peter Cousins and European bronze medallist Michelle Rogers. Commentators are Nick Mullins and Nicola Fairbrother.

At Qingdao, some 90 minutes flight south-east of Beijing, the sailing competition continues with the latest news from the boardsailors, lasers, 49ers and the final preliminary races for Ben Ainslie in the finn class and the yngling crew.

Commentators are Richard Simmonds, Shirley Robertson and Rob Walker. There is also swimming from the National Aquatics centre where Mark Foster, at the age of 38 and at his fifth Olympics, will try to qualify for the semi-finals of the men's 50m freestyle.

Day six action introduced by Sue Barker and Jake Humphrey. From the pool, the men's 100m butterfly and women's 200m backstroke heats, with commentary from Andy Jameson, Adrian Moorhouse and Sharron Davies.

Plus, second round action with the light-welterweights and the remaining welterweights fighting for quarter final spots in the boxing ring, with commentators Jim Neilly and Richie Woodhall.

There is quarter-final action from the badminton mixed doubles with the weight of British expectation falling on Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson, the Athens silver medallists now ranked sixth in the world, and Donna Kellogg and Anthony Clark, current European champions who are world ranked number eight. Commentators are David Mercer and Gill Clark.

Quarter-final action too in the men's and women's tennis singles. It is 20 years since tennis returned to the Games after an absence of 64 years. Champions in Seoul were the Czech Miroslav Mecir and the legendary Steffi Graf, who also won all four Grand Slam Championships that year. Commentary comes from John Lloyd, Sam Smith and Chris Bradnum.

In the women's hockey Britain's women, ranked ten in the world, will hope to get the better of New Zealand, who have a world ranking of seven. Commentators are Barry Davies and Sean Kerly.

There are also highlights of the men's all around gymnastics competition which took place in the early hours of the morning, with commentators Matt Baker, Christine Still and Mitch Fenner.

The best all round male gymnast in the world was crowned, and the spectacular canoe slalom venue was used for the last time. Fiona Pennie carried British hopes there, and we also now know how many of Britain's rowing crews will contest the finals at the weekend.

Britain's women's archers were looking for medal success, as were Peter Cousins and Michelle Rogers on the Judo mat. The semi-final line ups in badminton and tennis competitions were also decided and there are less than 48 hours until from the first sailing medals are decided.

Michael Johnson joins Gabby to look forward to the first athletics action in the Bird's Nest stadium. The highlights are expected to be the start of the Heptathlon, with Britain's Kelly Sotherton hoping to get a good start, and the beginning of the quest to find the fastest man in the world in the men's 100m.
