The Making of Mankind

on BBC Two England

A seven-part series tracing the origins of our species, presented by Richard Leakey. 1: In the Beginning
This is the story of every single person on earth. We all share a common ancestor with the great apes, yet while they have remained in the forests where they evolved, we stand today on the brink of conquering the heavens. When and why did our paths diverge? What made us human?
RICHARD LEAKEY begins his exploration of our origins by looking at the fossil evidence that our distant ancestors left behind, and the record of evolutionary change that those fossils reveal. He traces the crucial events of over eight million years ago that first took a group of primitive apes out of the forests and started them on the extraordinary path that ultimately was to lead to us.
