Roots of England: 4: Portland, Dorset

on BBC Two England

The jobs, jokes, relationships, responsibilities and shared experiences that have moulded the communities of the English nation have left them looking remarkably different from each other. A series of six films.
The Crown is still the Lord of the Manor and the 900-year-old Court Leet remains a symbol of the Portlander's independence and self-sufficiency. The 'island' of Portland has always supplemented its basic trades of stone-working and fishing by the windfall, whether in the form of a shipwreck or, as in the case of the latest enterprise, an opportunity to export tons of unwanted spider crabs to Spain.
Brian Trueman meets members of the close-knit families.
