When British troops finally leave Singapore at the end of 1971 nearly 30,000 Singaporeans will be looking for a job. Today unemployment is already a problem for the island and the Prime Minister, Lee Kwan Yew, is struggling to replace British military spending, which contributes a quarter of his total budget.
Will the Japanese take over when Britain leaves, or will there still be a future for sterling east of Suez?
