Amazon - The Last Frontier Narrated by Robin Ellis In the Amazon region of Brazil, thousands of men search for gold, settlers move to the west and Indians defend their hunting lands.
It is, in 1985, an action replay of the tragedies and the drama of the American Wild West of a century ago.
One of the most formidable Indian tribes in Amazonia, the Waimiri-Atroari numbered over 3,000 in 1974. Today there are barely 400 left, after the building of Brazil's great north road to Guyana and Venezuela.
All over the Amazon region today, the Indians are under pressure from Brazil's development projects. The march into the rain forest is polluting rivers and destroying the ancient way of life of the tribes - but the Indians are fighting back. In this programme, the Brazilian Indians, the Apinaje, the Kaiapo, the Xavante and the Xerente, speak up for themselves in defence of their threatened lands and way of life.
