Housed in the Castle are the Honours of Scotland - the Crown, Sceptre and Sword of State which were lost for over 100 years until discovered by Sir Walter Scott in 1818. The Sword of State is ' borne in accordance with ancient custom immediately before the Sovereign at the Installation of Knights of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle.'
