How I'd Love to Feel Free
Tonight's programme presents an insider's view of music from the South African townships. Cape Town-born director Jimi Matthews takes us into the shebeens, clubs and dance halls to celebrate the resilience and vitality of this flourishing musical scene. The film focuses on six groups who play everything from traditional rhythms to the infectious modern dance beat of mbaqanga. Artists featured include the Soul Brothers, who have been favourites on the South
African scene for over a decade: veteran blues singer Tandie Klaasen : and Peto, a band of young black and white musicians who believe that music can be a powerful unifying force.
