Eight films in which Robert Hughes looks at the past 100 years through the lens of its art. 4: Trouble in Utopia
One of the chief impulses of modernism was the desire to remake the world, to create an ideal architecture and an ideal art to promote the cause of an ideal society. A great deal of architectural thought is based on the idea that buildings can improve the thought and behaviour of the people who live in them. This proved to be a lost hope.
This film, shot on location in France, Germany, Brazil, New York and Chicago, includes unique archival material of Mies Van Der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius and a specially filmed interview with Philip Johnson
