A Special Concert to
Commemorate the Outbreak of the Second World War with Leonard Bernstein
Liv Ullmann , Hermann Prey Barbara Hendricks
Krzysztof Penderecki
Lukas Foss , Antoni Wit Marek Drewnowski and the Polish Radio National Symphony
Orchestra from Warsaw Opera House.
Fifty years ago this weekend, Nazi armed forces invaded
Poland. Tonight, in a unique collaboration between
American, Polish, German and British musicians and broadcasters, the event is commemorated in a concert of music from two centuries and three countries. The programme begins with the Polish national anthem and continues with a song from Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhom, the 'Lachrymosa' and 'Agnus Dei ' from the Polish Requiem by Penderecki, Schoenberg's Survivor from Warsaw, Beethoven's Overture Leonora No 3, Chopin's Polonaise in A flat and Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. The music is woven together by narrator Samuel Pisar , himself an Auschwitz survivor.
