The Fort George Volunteers

on BBC Two England

Written, narrated by Chris Serle

'There are still a lot of young people around today with the same healthy contempt for difficulty and danger that Drake, Livingstone and Stanley had all those years ago. In this island of shopkeepers, the old bulldog breed is still there.' (Col. John Blashford-Snell)

Two thousand five hundred teenagers from riot-torn Toxteth, Brixton, St Paul's and other depressed areas were given the chance last summer to take a free holiday with the Army. Explorer John Blashford-Snell requisitioned the huge, disused bastion Fort George in the Scottish Highlands to let his young holiday-makers loose on the toughest adventure training scheme the Army could devise.
